Steven Epstein received his B.A. from Harvard College (Social Studies) and his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (Sociology). He spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow in the Science Studies Program at UCSD before joining the Sociology department faculty in 1994. His areas of interest include sociology of medicine, sociology of science, social theory, social movements, sexuality, and lesbian/gay studies. He teaches in all of these areas.
Andrew Lakoff, Ph.DAndrew Lakoff received a PhD in anthropology at U.C. Berkeley (2000), and was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (2000-2002). His areas of interest include pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, technologies of the self, globalization processes, the history of the human sciences, and visual culture. His current research concerns biotechnology, biosecurity, and techniques of preparedness.
Andrew T. Scull, Ph.DAndrew Scull received his B.A. from Oxford University, and his Ph.D. from Princeton. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania and at Princeton prior to coming to UCSD. He studies psychiatry in Britain and the United States from the eighteenth through the twentieth century, the history of medical specialization and medical therapeutics, the history of sociology in the United States, and Durkheim and Durkheimian sociology. He is currently engaged in a study of the use of somatic therapies in Anglo-American psychiatry.
